Since the breakup of the Soviet Union and the end of Communism in Eastern Europe, American scholars have showed an interest in the changes taking place in Eastern European Education. Some of the resulting research is available on this campus, as is a certain amount of recent research published in Russia.

Subject Overview Texts

Numerous books have been published outlining how the recent changes in Eastern Europe have influenced the field of Education. Education in the New Russia addresses such issues as the legacy of the Soviet educational system in Russia, diversification in Russian Education, and the value of an education in the present social order in Russia. Educational Freedom in Eastern Europe, published in 1995, includes an introductory chapter on Communism, schools, and civil society, and separate chapters focusing on educational freedom and change in Russia and the Baltics, and many of the countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Other overview texts on recent developments in Education are Russian Education: Tradition and Transition, and Education and Economic Change in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union.

Statistics and Curricula

Educational statistics and other primary data for Eastern Europe have been published both at home and abroad. The Government Committee on Statistics of the Russian Federation has published Obrazovanie v Rossiiskoi Federatsii (Education in the Russian Federation), a resource which is now available on campus. Another volume which was commissioned by UNESCO from Soviet researchers is In Search of New Approaches to Basic Education and the Evaluation of Learning Achievement in the Last Days of the USSR. In addition, an extremely informative publication was issued by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation; Obshchee srednee obrazovanie Rossii: sbornik normativnykh dokumentov (Secondary Education in Russia: A Collection of Standard Documents) includes curricula in all the basic subject areas, chapters on teaching methodology in each area, and information about the number of hours spent in the study of the different subjects per year.

Bibliographies

A multilingual guide to the literature with a wide historical scope was compiled by William Brickman and John T. Zepper, and entitled Russian and Soviet Education, 1731-1989: a Multilingual Annotated Bibliography. These researchers traveled to universities all over the world to gather information and write annotations. The major disadvantage of this resource is that coverage ends in 1989, before many of the important changes took place in Eastern Europe.

Journals

Researchers into Eastern European Education are fortunate to have access to Pedagogika (Pedagogy), a journal published in Moscow since 1992 and covering issues in Education for the countries of the CIS. In addition to focusing on Education in Eastern Europe, each issue contains a section on current topics in international education from an Eastern European perspective.

Encyclopedias

Non-native speakers of Russian attempting to read this, and other Russian language publications, may choose to consult two pedagogical encyclopedias available on campus: Pedagogicheskaia entsiklopedia (Pedagogical Encyclopedia), and Rossiiskaia pedagogicheskaia entsiklopedia (Russian Pedagogical Encyclopedia). The latter, as opposed to the former which was published 1964-1968, is very current and incorporates the changes undergone by the Russian Federation. Unfortunately, all volumes of the latter have not yet been received by the library.
