Electronic Resources in the Social Sciences in REECA Studies in UW-Madison Libraries

Ideally, electronic resources should have been incorporated into the bibliography with relevant resources included in each section. However, the interdisciplinary nature of Internet sites and electronic indexing and abstracting databases would make a separate discussion under each discipline extremely time consuming and repetitive. For this reason, I will address the utility of individual sites and databases from the point of view of Social Sciences as a whole, and mention what sorts of information can be found in each resource, and in the case of databases, I will include in my discussion a list of relevant journals indexed.

All databases which I discuss in this bibliography are available through the Electronic Library of the UW-Madison at http://www.library.wisc.edu/databases/databases.html#title

Arts & Humanities Citation Index, compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information, indexes two Social Science journals of interest to researchers in Russian and Eastern European Area Studies: East European Politics and Society, and East European Quarterly.

Current Contents, published by the Institute for Scientific Information, is a database which provides access to the tables of contents of almost 4,000 international journals for the last six months, among them Post-Soviet Geography, Russian and East European Finance and Trade, Sotsiologicheskie issledovaniia, East European Quarterly, East European Politics and Societies, Eastern European Economics, and Problems of Economic Transition.

EconLit, published by the American Economics Association, indexes and abstracts approximately 300 English-language journals and books in the field of Economics, including Russian and East European Finance and Trade, and Eastern European Economics.

FBIS, or Foreign Broadcast Information Service provides indexing to new broadcasts, newspapers, periodicals, government statements, and other worldwide press materials in English translation. The full text Daily Reports microfiche collection is housed in the Microforms/Media Center, Room 443 Memorial Library. Some reports are available in paper copy as well. FBIS does not index any of the journals discussed in this bibliography, but it does provide a valuable resource for political scientists, economists, and others interested in the press of Eastern European countries.

GeoRef indexes scholarly literature worldwide in the areas of Geography and other earth sciences, including Post-Soviet Geography, a journal which provides information on research in Geography in the former Soviet Union, and which is available in the Geography Library at UW-Madison.

Historical Abstracts, published by ABC-Clio, Inc., indexes research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, not including the United States and Canada. Journals indexed include East European Quarterly, Slavic Review, Sotsiologicheskie issledovaniia, Voprosy ekonomiki, East European Politics and Societies, and East European Quarterly.

LEXIS/NEXIS, made available by Mead Data Central, is an online service which indexes over 700 full-text legal, news, and business databases. This service indexes international newspapers, magazines, wire services, newsletters, company and industry reports, and foreign news broadcasts. The LEXIS/NEXIS service, like FBIS, is extremely valuable for tracking the reporting of events in Eastern Europe.

PsychLit, a database produced by the American Psychological Association, covers research from over 1,300 journals worldwide. Included in this coverage are Journal of Russian and East European Psychology, and Pedagogika (Pedagogy) which are housed on campus in Memorial Library.

Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS), indexes periodicals, books, government documents, statistical publications, reports, directories, and many other forms of print literature published worldwide. Topics covered include Public Policy, Social Policy, and Social Sciences in general. Journals indexed in PAIS which contain research on Eastern Europe and which are available on campus include: East European Economics, Russian Social Science Review, Current Digest of the Post-Soviet Press, Russian & East European Finance and Trade, Post-Soviet Geography, East European Quarterly and Problems in Economic Transition.

Social Science Citation Index is a multidisciplinary index to over 1400 journals in the Social Sciences. In addition to searching by author, title, subject, etc., it is possible to search for items which cite a given publication, and to find articles sharing one or more cited reference. Journals indexed include East European Quarterly, Post-Soviet Geography, Russian and East European Finance and Trade, East European Politics and Societies, Problems of Economic Transition, and Eastern European Economics.

Social Science Index indexes over 400 premier periodicals in the fields of Economics, Political Science, Foreign Affairs, Sociology, Psychology, and Anthropology. East European Politics and Societies and East European Quarterly are journals indexed here which may be of interest to Social Scientists involved in Slavic and Eastern European Area Studies.

The UnCover database is similar to Current Contents, in that it provides access the tables of contents of almost 17,000 magazines and journals from around the world. About one third of these publications are in the Social Sciences. UnCover may be searched by author, key words appearing in titles or abstracts, or the tables of contents of individual journals may be browsed. In addition, it is possible to set up a personal profile at the Uncover site which will enable articles or journal tables of contents on particular topics to be sent to an e-mail address. Journals available at UnCover include Slavic Review, Current Politics and Economics of Russia, Eastern European Economics, Eastern European Politics and Societies, Problems of Economic Transition, Current Digest of the Post-Soviet Press, East European Quarterly, Journal of Russian and East European Psychology, Post-Soviet Geography, and Russian Social Science Review.
