Researchers in all Social Science disciplines will find it useful to consult the numerous directories, handbooks, and bibliographies available. The first section of this bibliography details available resources and their possible uses.
An Overview Text
Before consulting the numerous reference resources available, it may be helpful for scholars to gain an understanding of the context of the information which they will be researching. A book which explores from a Social Sciences perspective the problems facing the former Soviet republics after the breakup of the USSR is The Soviet Legacy, by Roy D. Laird. The question posed by the author in the book's preface can serve as a summary of it's contents: "What is the heritage of the people of the newly independent states, economically, physically, and psychologically, and what does that bequest bode for the foreseeable future?"

Directories of Scholars, Organizations, and Institutions
Social scientists interested in finding out more about Russian and East European Area Studies might consult some of the basic directories of the field, many of which are published by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies(AAASS). For example, the Directory of Programs, Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies, is a guide to Slavic and East European Studies programs in the United States and Canada. The Directory of Members of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies is a periodical publication which lists AAASS members, along with their biographical information, country/area of interest, address and phone number. A similar guide to Russian scholars is the Directory of Scholars in Slavic Studies in Institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, also published by AAASS. It also includes a calendar of conferences, announcements of job openings, and funding opportunities. Two directories, Independent Research Centers in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the Former USSR, and A Scholar's Guide to Humanities and Social Sciences in the Soviet Successor States: the Academies of Sciences of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaidzhan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, provide names, addresses and profiles for institutions conducting research in the Social Sciences and Humanities in the former Soviet republics.
Researchers on their way to Eastern Europe may want to consult guides to libraries, archives, and research centers, such as Guides to Libraries in Central and Eastern Europe, Archives in Russia 1993: a Brief Directory. Similar guides to Washington, D.C. and Great Britain are available as well: Library Resources in Britain for the study of Eastern Europe and the Former U.S.S.R., and Scholar's Guide to Washington, D.C. for Russian, Central Eurasian, and Baltic Studies: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrghyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, and Yearbooks
General factual information on Eastern Europe can be found in a variety of places. A trustworthy source of current facts and events is the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Russia and the Former Soviet Union, or Bolshoi entsiklopedicheskii slovar (Great Encyclopedic Dictionary), a two volume encyclopedia published in 1991, while more historical information can be found in the Bolshaia sovetskaia entsiklopediia (Great Soviet Encyclopedia), the thirty-one-volume third edition of which was published in 1970, and which became available in English translation in 1983, under the title Great Soviet Encyclopedia. The index is the key to the English edition, as the volumes retain the original Cyrillic alphabetical order. A yearly one-volume update to the encyclopedia, the Bolshaia sovietskaia entsiklopediia: Ezhegodnik, was published until 1989. It may be helpful for non-native Russians to consult a dictionary when reading Russian-language Social Science literature. A resource which focuses primarily on Social Science terminology and concepts is the Russian-English Social Science Dictionary.

Many useful bibliographies are available for scholars in Slavic studies. Some of the most recent are : Siberia and the Soviet Far East, Eastern Europe Bibliography, Russia/U.S.S.R., published by Clio Press, and Bibliography of the Soviet Union, its Predecessors and Successors. A well-established yearly bibliography is The American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. J. Thomas Shaw, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, was the first editor of this bibliography. A bibliography of government publications published by the G.P.O. is available as well, called simply Russia, as is a bibliography of Slavic Studies references sources, Slavic Studies: A Guide to Bibliographies, Encyclopedias, and Handbooks, by Murlin Croucher.
