Although there are many resources on the geography of Russia and Eastern Europe, the collection is somewhat lopsided. The majority of current resources are in English and provide an introduction to the field from the perspective of a particular discipline rather than detailed analysis of issues.

Subject Overview Texts

The most general of the overview texts is a very basic introduction to the Geography of the former Soviet Republics, entitled The Post-Soviet Republics: A Systematic Geography. An introductory text of a more comparative nature, Beyond Borders: a New Geography of Russia and the United States, is on order at the Geography Library. The Art and Science of Geography: U.S and Soviet Perspectives, rather than being an introduction to the geography of Russia or the USSR is an analysis of the discipline as it is practiced in the Soviet Union and the United States. Topics addressed include Geography as a discipline, geographic education, and the way in which Geography is used to address global problems.

Perspectives from other Disciplines

Many of the Geography resources are written from the slant of a particular discipline. Robert Kaiser uses Geography to examine the issues of nationalism and nationalities in Russia and the former republics; The Geography of Nationalism in Russia and the USSR explores the role of territoriality in nation building and the development of nationalism and national consciousness. In Human Geography in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, Ludwik Mazurkiewicz explores the ways in which seventy years of communism have affected the study of Geography in Eastern Europe. There is an emphasis on recent trends and possible future developments as a result the breakup of the Soviet Union. The New Political Geography of Eastern Europe is a collection of papers which attempt to outline the political geography of Eastern Europe as it has developed over the last several years. Issues addressed include new electoral politics, political and economic relations, and post-Cold War security. A working paper published by the Centre for European Policy Studies, Redesigning Economic Geography after the Fall of the Soviet Empire, examines whether the breakup of the Soviet Union will be economically advantageous for the former republics, and with whom the former republics will develop trade relations in the future.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

A major problem that researchers from all disciplines will encounter when studying Eastern Europe is changing place names. Two reference resources which may aid in such problems are Goroda Rossii: Entsiklopediia (Cities of Russia: An Encyclopedia), and Imena gorodov : vchera i segodnia: 1917-1992 (City Names: Yesterday and Today). The former provides statistical and background information about Russian towns and cities, while indicating any name changes which may have taken place, while the latter focuses primarily on name changes, and the circumstances surrounding them.

Journals

Formerly entitled Soviet Geography, Post-Soviet Geography is a premier journal in the field. It contains contribution from both Western and Eastern European scholars on the Geography of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Emphasis is on both information and analysis of issues in this region of the world.
