Owing to the political and economic changes in Eastern Europe over the past six years, library searchers face the challenge of navigating through a sea of new and ever-increasing information concerning the former republics of the Soviet Union. In compiling this bibliography, the I have attempted to provide librarians and researchers with a guide to resources available at the UW-Madison on this rapidly developing area of the world. Resources in the fields of Eastern European Education, Anthropology, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, Economics, and the Social Sciences in general have been covered. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of social science fields, it is assumed that researchers will not be restricted to the resources in any one area. The geographical scope of the resources treated will be either the whole of Eastern Europe, or Russia as a country. Other former republics of the Soviet Union will not be treated separately in this essay.
In order to limit this resource to information of current interest, references will be made to books published within the last five years; recent changes in the social and political landscape have rendered information published prior to this time inaccurate or irrelevant, except to those interested in historical information. I have included materials published in both Russian and English, and have listed specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias whenever necessary to aid in the use of Russian language materials. Other resources discussed are print and electronic journals, major references sources such as handbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias and indexes, electronic indexing and abstracting services, subject monographs which give an overview of recent changes, and relevant Internet sites. An attempt has been made to include works containing primary data, in addition to works of research and interpretation, published both in Russia and abroad. Periodicals which have gone out of print have been excluded, as they will no longer provide current information on Slavic and East European Area Studies.
This bibliography was compiled by Lisa Gromov as her final project for Literature of the Social Sciences, a class at the School of Library and Information Studies, UW-Madison.
