The core of the Helen
Louise Allen Textile Collection is approximately 3,000 textiles given
as a gift by Professor Helen Louise Allen. Since her death in 1968, the
original gift has quadrupled, making it among the largest and most comprehensive
university textile collections in the country. The goal of the collection
is to provide educational resources that further the understanding of human
beings within their material and social environment through the study of
textiles of artistic, cultural and historic significance.
The library contains a rich collection of books on Slavic and East European
and Central Asian folk art and textiles, including such titles as "Turkmen
Needlework," "The Decorative Art of Russia," "Kaitag: Textile Art from
Daghestan," "Folk Art in Poland," and "Russian Peasant Design Motifs for
Needleworkers and Craftsmen."
